There are five Australians on the Sault Ste. Marie Cougars roster this season, which is not something you stumble across every day in Canadian junior football.
William Brine, George Limb and Christian Barsic are all back for a second season. John Lemalu joined this year, and Ruari Foster is also on the roster at linebacker.
The connection started at the 2024 IFAF U20 World Championship in Edmonton. Cougars coach Paul Orazietti saw members of the Australian team training and started talking to Brine about the possibility of playing in Canada.
That conversation ended up opening a door.
Brine made the move first, and others followed. Limb has since become one of the better defensive players in the Ontario Conference, earning all-star recognition last season. Barsic has also developed into a regular contributor.
Barsic has become one of the most productive Australians in the Canadian junior game. Through eight games, current CJFL statistics list him with 40 total tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception.
Lemalu is the newest arrival, while Foster gives the Cougars another Australian on defence.
What makes the Sault story interesting is that this is no longer just one Australian trying his luck overseas. The club now has a small group of them, with returning players, new arrivals and enough continuity that it is starting to look like a genuine pathway.
The Cougars are also unbeaten, so the Australians are part of a team having a very good season.
The NCAA gets most of the attention when Australians head overseas, but Sault is showing there are other routes to meaningful football.
