Oregon is 1–0. It is also no longer the No. 2 team in the country.
The Ducks beat Boise State 34–27 at Autzen Stadium, but the first regular-season AP poll moved Oregon down to No. 6. Ohio State remained No. 1, followed by Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas and Indiana.
Why voters cooled on Oregon
The score explains much of it. Oregon needed a 62-yard fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Dante Moore to Dakorien Moore to break a 27–27 tie, and Boise State stayed within one score despite entering as the lower-ranked team.
Dante Moore still produced an encouraging line: 378 passing yards, while Jeremiah McClellan had 150 receiving yards and Jordon Davison led the ground game with 90.
This is not a crisis
Early September rankings move violently because voters are replacing preseason assumptions with actual evidence. Oregon did not lose. It simply gave voters less reason to keep it ahead of several other unbeaten teams.
The more useful question is whether the issues that allowed Boise State to hang around travel to Stillwater this weekend. Oregon now plays Oklahoma State in its first road game of the season.
The Australian viewing angle
Oregon's game at Oklahoma State kicks at 9:00am Pacific on Saturday, which is 2:00am AEST Sunday. It is an ugly Australian timeslot, but the first road performance will tell us considerably more than another poll debate.
AGN read: Oregon falling to No. 6 is fair as an early signal, not a verdict. The Ducks now get the fastest possible chance to show whether Boise State exposed real problems or simply produced a competitive opener.
